Forklift Basic Operation And Safety

Post by MaritzaColloco »

Do not operate this truck unless you have been trained and authorized to do so. Read all warnings and instructions in operator’s manual. Operation and Maintenance Manual is supplied with all lift truck or they are available from your lift truck dealers.

Do not operate this forklift truck until you have checked out its condition. Give special attention to Tires, Rims, Horn, Lights, Battery(s), Controller, Lift and Tilt Systems including forks or attachments, chains, cable and limit switches, brakes, steering mechanisms, fuel system, hydraulic hoses and guards.

Operate lift trucks only from the designated operating position. Never place any part of your body into the mast or structures, between the mast and the truck, or outside of the truck. Do not ever carry passengers or allow people to ride on it. Do not operate the truck without the overhead guard installed and in perfect condition unless conditions prevent use of a guard. Use special care if operating without an overhead guard. Do not handle loads which are higher than the load backrest or load backrest extension unless the load is secured so that no part of it can fall backwards.

Do not handle any unstable or loosely stacked loads. Use special care when handling very long, high or wide loads to avoid losing the load, striking other people or equipment, or tipping the truck over. Do not overload forklift. Check the capacity plate for load weight and load center information.

Start, stop, travel, steer and brake smoothly. Slow down on turns and on any uneven or slippery surfaces that could cause the forklift to slide or overturn. Use special care when traveling forward or reverse without a load as the risk of overturning the forklift is greater in this condition.

Lift the forks or other lifting mechanism only to pick up or stack a load. Lifting and lowering should only be done with the mast vertical or tilted slightly backward, NEVER FORWARD. Watch out for obstructions, especially overhead. Operate the tilting mechanism slowly and smoothly. Do not tilt the mast forward when it is elevated except to pick up or deposit a pallet. When stacking products, use only enough backward tilt to stabilize your load. Travel with a load or lifting mechanism as low as possible to the floor and tilted backward. Always look in the direction your are traveling. Keep a clear view of the are. When a load interferes with your visibility, travel with the load or lifting mechanism trailing (except when climbing up a grade).

Use special care when operating on ramps. Travel slowly and do not angle or turn the forklift. When your truck is loaded, travel with the load uphill. When truck is empty, travel with the lifting mechanism downhill.

Observe any traffic regulations. Yield the right of way to all pedestrians. Slow down and sound your horn at cross aisles and wherever vision is obstructed. When using the forks, space them as far apart as your load will permit. Before lifting any products, be sure it is centered and forks are completely underneath load.

Do not allow anyone to stand or walk under lifting mechanisms. Do not lift people on the forks except on a securely attached specially designed work platform fixture. Use extreme care when lifting people. Place mast in vertical position, place truck controls in neutral and apply brakes. Lift and lower smoothly. Always be on the forklift and able to operate the controls as long as people are on the work fixture. Never transport personnel on forks or work fixture.

Before getting off the lift truck shift it into neutral, fully lower lifting mechanism and set the parking brake. When leaving truck unattended be sure to shut off the truck.
