Park brake not holding Caterpillar P12000

Post by Stanthemen »

The parking brake is not holding on a Caterpillar P12000 forklift propane forklift, when you turn on the truck the light on the dash says the park brake is on. When i pull or push the parking brake button i can hear something actuate, like a switch or solenoid but the forklift will still move forward or reverse because the brake will not hold it. Any help on this question would be great.

Hello!! Welcome to fixaforklift.com!!

The P12000 Caterpillar truck that you are reffering to has an internal actuated transmission parking brake. Meaning their is a Parking brake clutch assembly inside the transmission, what you are hearing is the solenoid actuate on/off but their is no lock up between the clutch pack. You might hear some rubbing but no engagement. Caterpillar does sell the actually clutch pack by itself, you would have to remove the transmission in order to get to it, but You can purchase a rebuilt Transmission from Cat for a couple thousand more since you've made it that far.

The PCM does see the parking brake on and the truck will move with it on as well, a code will the recorded but not displayed, pretty much saying the truck was driven with the parking brake on,

This wear and tear happens due to inproperly engaging the parking brake, possibly the driver would stop using the foot brake and will turn on the parking brake while slow rolling to park, possibly forgetting that the parking brake was on and trying to drive anyway. This is a safety concern and if you are the driver you should notify management ASAP.
